Hello!
I'm Sanyu and I'm a Ugandan-American children's book author based in Houston, Texas.
I'm grateful to be involved in storytelling by way of publishing my own children's books.
I have a family of 5 (Papa, Mama, Jama, Akah and Koko) who continuously live in my head, make me laugh and encourage me to share their experiences with the world.
I believe that all children, including African children, should be able to see themselves in stories. Not just in books but movies, poems, dance, artwork and all other forms of artistic expression.
One of my goals is to reach a global audience with my stories. If you feel inclined to participate in my goal, please share my posts, website, books, etc. Thanks for your support.
When I was in seventh grade, I wrote my first children’s book as part of an English class project. It wasn't until decades later, after my parents finally downsized my childhood home, when the book resurfaced. My mother encouraged me to publish it and I gladly honored her wishes. Never in a million years would I have thought about becoming a children’s book author and yet, here we are.
Growing up as a child of immigrants, I never saw anyone who looked like me in children’s books. I now have an opportunity to give kids a chance to see themselves in the stories they read.
When kids encounter characters who look like them and live experiences similar to theirs, it fosters a sense of belonging and pride. It empowers them to embrace their identities and builds confidence that their stories matter.
African children's books provide an opportunity to celebrate diversity and global experiences which, in turn, ensures that every child knows they are seen, heard, and valued in the world of books. Representation is not just important; it’s essential for shaping an inclusive future.
I had the great pleasure of joining Gil Ingles, the producer of Diaspora Central, for an insightful conversation in his studio.
Diaspora Central is a platform dedicated to showcasing the culture, talent, and creativity of the African diaspora. Since launching in 2020, it’s remained committed to informing, educating, inspiring, entertaining, and empowering the Diaspora community through impactful programming and initiatives.
We talked about the power of storytelling, what it means to have courage, the importance of representation in children's books, how the Diaspora shapes our narratives and what it means to embrace creativity.
